Technical Information

INSTALLATION METHOD:

  1. Check the floor to ensure it is level and free of any protruding objects. Use a screwdriver or hammer to set any screws or nails below the surface. Apply floor leveling compound to the floor or spackling compound to the wall to correct any uneven areas. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for using these products. Allow time for them to dry.
  2. Prepare 1/2-inch cement fiberboard to attach to wooden subfloors. To cut the fiberboard, set a straight edge tool on top of the fiberboard and draw a utility knife along the edge to cut a straight line. Space fiberboard pieces 1/4-inch apart and leave a 1/4-inch expansion gap around the perimeter of the room. Stagger all joints.
  3. Add enough water to thinset mortar to make it the consistency of mashed potatoes. Spread the thinset on the floor and set the pieces of fiberboard into it. Use a carpenter’s level as you set the fiberboard to ensure the floor or wall remains level.
  4. Mark the midpoint of each wall and connect opposite walls with a chalk line. The chalk lines should cross at the midpoint of the floor at right angles. Check that the angles are correct with a carpenter’s angle. Re-mark the lines, if necessary.
  5. Plan the tile layout by laying a row of tiles along the grid line on the floor. While you may need to cut the tiles around the outer perimeter, the space should be even to give the room a balanced appearance
  6. Mix thinset mortar to the consistency of mashed potatoes. Spread a small amount of mortar on the floor with a notched trowel along the legs of one quadrant. Set the first tile so both sides touch the chalk line. Add spacers and then set a tile against the first tile and with its edge against the chalk line. Repeat for the other leg of the quadrant.
  7. Continue to add mortar as you fill in the first quadrant. Keep placing spacers between tiles to preserve grout lines. Do not set the tiles in the outer perimeter. Use the level periodically to ensure the floor’s surface is level. Set the tiles in the remaining three quadrants in a similar manner.
  8. Measure the distance between the outside tile and the wall. Mark that amount on a tile. Cut the tile with a wet saw with a diamond blade. Set the tile in place. Continue this process to set all the tiles around the perimeter of the room.
  9. Allow the thinset to dry. Remove the spacers.
  10. Mix white grout with water to form a thick paste. Rub the grout into the joints with a grout float. Work across joints diagonally to completely fill each opening.
  11. Remove excess grout from the surface of the travertine tile with a clean, damp sponge. Grout a small area at a time to keep the grout from drying on the surface of the tiles.
  12. Rub off any haze that remains on the grouted wall with a clean, soft cloth. Allow the grout to cure for the time recommended by the manufacturer.
