Technical Information

INSTALLATION METHOD:

  1. Measure the area where you intend to install the limestone and find the center line. Snap a chalk line down this line to mark it. If this is a floor, locate the wall furthest from the door you enter the room by and mark the center line from this point across the floor to the opposite wall. If this is a wall, mark the center line vertically from top to bottom.
  2. Lay out the limestone tiles either directly on the area you want to install them on, or in an area of equal size and shape. Take the tiles from multiple boxes at a time and mix them together as you lay to blend the colors of the stone. If some stones have pleasing fossils or marks, place them in areas where they will be more likely to be seen. Likewise if tiles have coloring or markings that do not appeal, place them on the edges of the installation.
  3. Start the first row of tile either against the wall furthest from the door where you enter the room, or on the bottom of the wall installation. Set the first tile on the chalk line you marked and the next tiles evenly out to each side to give a balanced installation. These places cut tiles where they are least likely to be seen. Use tile spacers if necessary to keep the tile lines straight.
  4. Cut the limestone to fit the edges of the installation on a tile wet saw. Double check their fit with the rest of the tiles in the dry layout before you install them.
  5. Take up the limestone tiles in the opposite order you laid them down in and set them aside. Spread a thin layer of white, latex additive thinset mortar over the area you want to install the limestone on. Press the tiles into the mortar in the pattern you determined in the dry fit. Set them at a slight angle, then twist them into place for good coverage.
  6. Beat the tiles into the mortar every few rows with a rubber mallet. Take care that the edges of the tiles are all laying flat, and that none are higher than the others. If this occurs, beat the tile further into the mortar.
  7. Let the mortar dry for 24 hours, then seal the limestone before grouting. Paint the sealer on with a foam paint brush and let it soak into the tiles for 10 minutes. Wipe away the excess with a soft cloth. The sealer acts as a grout release and helps prevent the grout from staining the tiles.
  8. Grout the limestone by spreading the grout over the tiles and grout joints with a grout float. Hold the float at a 45-degree angle to the tiles to pack the grout between the joints. Scrape off any excess grout with the edge of the float.
  9. Let the grout dry for 10 minutes, then wash the limestone with a grout sponge. Wring out the sponge well and work it in circles over the tiles, rinsing it frequently until the limestone is clean. Let the grout dry for 24 hours.
